You're in a virtual interview. Everything's going great.

Then your roommate walks in yelling, your dog starts barking, or a siren goes off outside.

Interview over.

Here's how to control your environment:

24 hours before:

Tell everyone you live with your exact interview time.

Send a text: "I have an interview tomorrow 2-3pm. Please keep noise down and don't knock on my door during that hour."

Put a sign on your door: "Interview in progress - do not disturb"

30 minutes before:

Close all windows (block outside noise)
Turn off fans, AC units, anything that hums
Put your phone on Do Not Disturb
Close all other apps and browser tabs
Put pets in another room
Lock your door if possible

During the interview:

If unexpected noise happens, acknowledge it briefly and move on:

"Apologies for the noise - let me continue..."

Don't over-apologize or dwell on it.

What to do if something goes really wrong:

Your internet crashes:

Immediately call or text the interviewer:

"So sorry - my internet just went out. Can I call you on my phone to continue or reschedule?"

Someone walks in:

"Excuse me one moment" → Mute yourself, handle it quickly, unmute

"Sorry about that interruption. You were asking about..."

Fire alarm goes off:

"I'm so sorry, the fire alarm just went off in my building. Can we reschedule? I'm really interested in continuing our conversation."

The backup plan:

If your living situation is too chaotic:

  • Use a quiet library study room

  • Ask if you can use a friend's apartment

  • Book a co-working space for the hour

  • See if your university has private interview rooms

Test everything 2 hours before:

  • Camera works

  • Microphone works

  • Lighting is good

  • Background is clean

  • Internet is stable

  • No background noise

Do this today:

If you have an interview coming up, scout your location now.

Sit where you'll sit. Turn on your camera. What do you hear? What's visible behind you?

Fix problems now, not 5 minutes before the interview.

Control what you can control.
