I have some shocking news to share.
A groundbreaking study just came out that's going to change everything you know about job searching.
Researchers discovered that recruiters actually READ cover letters.
Not only that - they're the MOST IMPORTANT part of your application.
Here's what the study found:
87% of recruiters spend an average of 15 minutes carefully reading each cover letter, analyzing every sentence for grammar, tone, and personality.
The longer your cover letter, the better. Recruiters prefer cover letters that are 3+ pages long because it shows you're "thorough and committed."
Generic cover letters work best. The study found that personalized cover letters actually hurt your chances because they seem "try-hard." Recruiters prefer "Dear Hiring Manager" and templates you found on Google.
Starting with your life story is key. Recruiters love when you begin with "Ever since I was 7 years old, I've dreamed of working in marketing..." because it shows passion.
End with a poem. 64% of hired candidates included an original poem about the company in their cover letter. Recruiters find this "memorable and creative."
Based on this research, here's what you should do immediately:
❌ Stop customizing your resume
❌ Ignore match scores
❌ Apply to jobs you're not qualified for
✅ Spend 4 hours writing a 5-page cover letter with a sonnet at the end
JUST KIDDING. Happy April Fools! 🎉
The truth is the exact opposite:
Reality check:
Most recruiters spend 6 seconds scanning your resume, not 15 minutes on your cover letter
They want cover letters SHORT (250 words max, 3 paragraphs)
Generic cover letters = instant rejection
Nobody wants to read your childhood dreams or poetry
Your resume and match score matter WAY more than your cover letter
The actual strategy that works:
✅ Keep cover letters to 3 short paragraphs (if required at all)
✅ Make them specific to the role and company
✅ Focus on what you can DO, not what you've dreamed about
✅ Spend 10 minutes on it max, not 4 hours
✅ Use Runway's match scores to apply strategically
Do this today:
If you've been spending hours on elaborate cover letters, stop.
Use that time to tailor your resume and apply to more jobs with high match scores instead.
Quality applications > poetic cover letters.

P.S. If you were about to start adding poems to your cover letters, I'm glad I caught you in time. Please don't do that.
