I talked to a student yesterday who applied to 80 jobs last month.
He got 1 response.
Here's the problem: He was playing a volume game with a quality strategy.
You can't spray and pray with customized resumes. You'll burn out and your applications will be sloppy.
The better approach:
Apply to fewer jobs. But apply better.
15 strategic applications > 50 generic ones
What "strategic" means:
✅ You meet 70%+ of the requirements
✅ The role actually matches your skills and interests
✅ You customize your resume for each one
✅ You follow up within 48 hours
✅ You research the company before applying
What "generic" means:
❌ You barely read the job description
❌ You send the same resume to everyone
❌ You never follow up
❌ You apply because the title sounds good
The math:
Generic approach:
50 applications
0 customization
0 follow-ups
Response rate: 2% (1 interview)
Strategic approach:
15 applications
Fully customized
Follow up on all
Response rate: 20% (3 interviews)
Same time investment. 3x the results.
How to be strategic:
Step 1: Use Runway's filtering to find jobs that have been posted within 24 hours.
Step 2: Use the match scores to see if you're actually qualified. Only apply if you're 80%+ match and genuinely interested.
Step 3: Spend 20-30 minutes customizing each resume
Step 4: Follow up 48 hours later with a specific question
Step 5: Track everything and measure your response rate
The hard truth:
If you're applying to 50+ jobs a month and getting no responses, the problem isn't the job market.
It's your strategy.
Do this today:
Look at your tracker. Calculate your response rate (responses ÷ applications).
If it's under 5%, you're applying to too many jobs without enough customization.
Cut your volume in half. Double your effort per application.
Quality over quantity always wins.
