Most student resumes I see have:

What's missing? Leadership.

If you're early in your career with limited work experience, your leadership section is often MORE impressive than your internships.

Why leadership matters:

It proves you can:

What counts as leadership:

✅ Club officer positions (VP, President, treasurer)
✅ Leading a project team or initiative
✅ Starting a club or organization
✅ Organizing events or fundraisers
✅ Mentoring or tutoring programs
✅ Sports team captain

What does NOT count:

❌ Just being a "member" of a club
❌ Attending meetings without contributing
❌ Positions with no actual responsibilities

How to format your leadership section:

Position Title | Organization Name | Dates
What you actually did + measurable impact (1-2 lines)

Example:

VP of Marketing | Georgia Tech Marketing Club | Aug 2025 - Present
Led social media strategy that grew Instagram following from 500 to 3,200. Organized 5 industry speaker events attended by 200+ students.

Founder | Campus Sustainability Initiative | Jan 2025 - Present
Started organization focused on reducing campus waste. Coordinated volunteer team of 15 students and reduced dining hall waste by 40%.

Peer Mentor | Computer Science Department | Sept 2024 - May 2025
Mentored 8 freshman CS students through their first year. 7 out of 8 maintained 3.5+ GPA and all continued in the major.

The advantage:

Employers hiring entry-level roles know you don't have 5 years of work experience. But they want to see that you've led something, organized people, or created impact.

Two candidates with similar GPAs and internships - the one who was VP of a club and organized events gets the interview.

Do this today:

Add a "Leadership" or "Leadership & Involvement" section to your resume. List 2-3 positions where you actually led something.

Include numbers: members you led, events you organized, money you raised, impact you created.

Show them you take initiative.
