The interview felt great.

You connected with the interviewer. Answered questions well. They smiled and nodded.

Then... silence. No response. No rejection. Nothing.

Here's what probably happened:

Reason 1: You didn't send a thank you email

Sounds small. But 80% of candidates don't send one.

If it comes down to you and one other person, the thank you email can be the tiebreaker.

What to send within 24 hours:

"Thank you for taking the time to speak with me yesterday about the [Role] position. I really enjoyed learning about [specific thing discussed] and I'm even more excited about the opportunity to contribute to [team/project]. Please let me know if you need any additional information from me."

Short. Specific. Professional.

Reason 2: You didn't ask about next steps

At the end of the interview, you should always ask:

"What are the next steps in the process?"

This shows interest and gives you a timeline for when to follow up.

If they said "We'll be in touch by Friday" and Friday passes with no word, you follow up Monday.

Reason 3: You didn't clearly express interest

They can't read your mind.

If you don't explicitly say "I'm very interested in this role and excited to move forward," they might assume you're just exploring options.

End every interview with:

"Thank you again for your time today. This role is exactly what I'm looking for, and I'd love to move forward to the next round."

Reason 4: Someone else was slightly more qualified

This isn't personal. Sometimes another candidate had 2 years of experience vs. your 1 year.

You can't control this. Move on.

Reason 5: They're just slow

Some companies take 2-4 weeks between interview rounds.

If it's been less than 2 weeks, don't panic yet.

What to do when you don't hear back:

After 1 week:

Send a brief follow-up email:

"Hi [Name], I wanted to follow up on my interview last week for the [Role] position. I'm still very interested and excited about the opportunity. Are there any updates on the timeline or next steps?"

After 2 weeks:

Follow up one more time. If still no response, move on mentally but keep the door open.

After 3+ weeks:

Assume it's not happening. Keep applying elsewhere.

The hard truth:

Sometimes companies ghost candidates. It's unprofessional, but it happens.

Don't take it personally. Don't dwell on it. Keep moving forward.

Do this today:

If you interviewed in the past week and haven't sent a thank you email, send one now (better late than never).

If you interviewed 1-2 weeks ago with no update, send a follow-up today.

Then focus your energy on new opportunities.
