You want to network on LinkedIn. Good.
So you search "software engineer" and start messaging random people at random companies asking for advice.
That's not networking. That's spam.
Here's the problem: You're reaching out to people who can't help you, don't know you, and have no reason to respond.
Let me show you how to find the RIGHT people to message.
Step 1: Start with a specific job you want
Don't just network randomly. Pick an actual job posting you're interested in applying to (or already applied to).
Example: "Marketing Intern at Nike"
Step 2: Find people who ACTUALLY work in that role or team
Go to LinkedIn. Search: "Nike marketing"
Filter by:
People (not jobs or posts)
Current company: Nike
Add "intern" or "coordinator" or "associate" to find people 1-2 levels above entry-level
Why 1-2 levels above?
They remember what it's like to be in your position
They're not getting 100 LinkedIn messages a day like senior leaders
They're often involved in the hiring process
They actually have time to respond
Step 3: Look for people who share something in common with you
Check their profiles for:
Same university (huge advantage - alumni help alumni)
Same major or degree
Similar clubs or organizations (they were in the same marketing club, debate team, etc.)
Similar first job or internship (they started where you are now)
Shared background = higher response rate.
Step 4: Check if they're open to being contacted
Look for signals they're receptive:
"Open to connecting" or "Career advice" in their headline
They post regularly on LinkedIn (active users respond more)
They have "Open to" settings visible (click on their profile to see)
They've shared career advice posts before
Step 5: Prioritize who to message
Tier 1 (message first):
Alumni from your school in your target role
People who went to your school + work at your target company
Current interns or recent grads (1-2 years out) in similar roles
Tier 2 (message if Tier 1 doesn't respond):
Same major/field of study at different schools
People who mention mentoring or helping students
Recruiters who specifically work on entry-level hiring
Tier 3 (last resort):
Senior people with no connection to you
Executives and VPs (they won't respond)
People with "Influencer" mode on (too many messages already)
Real example of how this works:
Bad approach:
Search "Google" → Message 10 random Google employees → Get 0 responses
Good approach:
Find "Software Engineer Intern" job at Google
Search "Google software engineer intern" on LinkedIn
Filter for people who went to YOUR university
Find 3 people who graduated 1-3 years ago
Message them with a specific question about their experience
Get 2 responses, one offers to refer you
The difference? You're being strategic, not random.
Pro tip: Use Boolean search
LinkedIn search: "Nike" AND "marketing" AND "Georgia Tech"
This finds Nike marketing people who went to Georgia Tech. Instant common ground.
What NOT to do:
❌ Message 50 random people at your dream company
❌ Reach out to CEOs and executives
❌ Contact people with zero connection to you or your goals
❌ Send the same generic message to everyone
Do this today:
Pick ONE job you want to apply to. Use this process to find 3-5 people who are:
In that role or adjacent to it
1-2 years ahead of you in their career
Share something in common with you (school, major, organization)
Save their profiles. Tomorrow, we'll talk about what to actually say to them.
Network with purpose, not at random.
